The Sinking
A Little Mermaid Retelling
Ready to read it?
The Sinking is part of the Of The Deep Mermaid Anthology from Crescent Sea Publishing.
You can read the fully short story inside the anthology, and this fall, you can read the standalone novella for The Sinking, as well as my second story in the anthology, The Origins of the Siren Wars.
When a quirky older woman pawns a fancy seashell necklace
at her mother’s antique shop on the pier,
Cara doesn’t think much about the story
the woman spins about the wearer turning into a mermaid.
On her way home,
she accidentally drops the necklace into the ocean
and is swept out to sea
where she meets Quay—a merman who volunteers
to take her to his mother, the sea queen,
to help her get her legs back.
Cara soon learns that it’s Quay’s eighteen birthday—
a day that has been a curse for his family—
and is also meant to be one for her too.
Now she must fight to survive the sea with Quay at her side.
Did You Know?
The antiques/pawn shop is a reference to the little mermaid collecting things?
I loved the idea of making Cara a bit of a collector at the beginning of the story.
Quay is also a bit of a collector in his own right, as well.

A twisted
Little Mermaid retelling novella
Meet the Characters
Cara
Cara works in her parents’ antiques/pawn shop. She’s very studious and enjoys creating and collecting objects in the shop.
Quay
Quay is the prince of the sea. He’s very loyal to his people and spends as much of his time helping them as possible.
Originally, I hadn’t planned on this being a retelling. I added in hints from the classic, but it quickly turned into a twisted retelling and all my beta readers pointed out that it was a great retelling without me having
told them it was a retelling,
so I knew we had a winner!
The markings on Cara’s tail are representative of the lion fish. The shape of her tail is very different than that of the mermaids in my other mer stories.
